Introduction

Welcome to MakeDoChairs.com by Corina's Crafts! We are your source for custom-built uphostered make-do chairs. They make a perfect addition to your primitive home decor.

History

Make-do chairs were originally created not because of their looks, but because they served a purpose - to keep the person sitting warm from the drafts that many older homes and fireplaces had. Their history dates back to the 18th century when the "wing back" chair was first invented. While some people could acquire the newly styled chair, many people could not, so they would "make-do" with what they had, and built their own from an old ladder-back chair by adding a high back and sides from whatever scraps of wood were available, and covered it with whatever fabric or quilts they had laying around.

Our Chairs

Each of our make-do chairs are individually crafted. No two are the same, so you get a unique chair each time! We start with an antique chair and build the sturdy framework for the back and sides, then it is secured to the seat. The back and sides are then covered with batting and the fabric is cut and sewn to fit the chair. The fabric is a neutral color that is tea-stained for a great primitive look! As a finishing touch, a removable "lumpy cushion" can also be tailored, which is placed on the seat for extra padding. The lumpy cushion can be made with the same material as the chair, or a different material (solid color or patterned) to give an extra splash of color, as seen in some of the pictures on this page.

Size

Our standard chair measures 47" tall and 23" wide at the back. The seat is about 18" deep, 20" wide at the back and 21" wide at the front. The height of the seat depends on the antique chair that is used to start with. For chairs that have arms, the top of the arm is about 24"-25" from the floor.

Options

Because our chairs are made individually, you have options! You can define the height and width of the chairs to ensure the proper fit for your setting. You can also choose the color for the legs, fabric, and "lumpy cushion". Additional costs may apply, depending on the options selected. If you have a specific material or pattern you need to match, you may provide us with the fabric. Just give us a call and we'd be happy to work with you to help you craft the perfect make-do chair for your primitive setting!

Pricing and Shipping

Our standard chair, similar to what is pictured here, sells for $495, plus actual shipping costs to their destination. We are located in Central Wisconsin, so if you live within driving distance, you may pick up the chairs to eliminate the shipping charges. If you would like to discuss specific options, give us a call and we'll give you a quote on what you're looking for.

Availability

Because our chairs are made-to-order and not stocked, it typically takes 2 - 4 weeks to manufacture, depending on our current order volume.
